On June 29th, 2009 the MBTA sponsored a meeting at the Capuano Early
Childhood Center in East Somerville to present preliminary design ideas
for the Assembly Square Station and to solicit public comments. Despite
the large area to be served by the station (145 acres), the proposed
design has only one head house. In a handout created for the meeting (see below),
Wig Zamore explains that two head houses would significantly increase T
use and thereby reduce highway emissions in East Somerville, an
environmental justice neighborhood. A
comment letter (pdf) from
Livable Streets and Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership (STEP) also
stresses the need for a second head house at Assembly Square. A head
house is a point of entry/exit to the station platform.
